What is Appropriate for the Beach?

Did you hear?  The southern French city of Cannes has banned burkinis from their beaches.  Burkinis are what many Muslim women wear to swim, but the mayor has stated:  “Access to beaches and for swimming is banned to anyone who does not have (swim wear) which respects good customs and secularism.”

Upon reading this, I had to laugh and shake my head.

Have you been to the beaches in southern France?  Along the Mediterranean, it's very common to see topless women.  Even at our lake here in Aix, it's not uncommon to see woman lounging at the beach in only bikini bottoms while men sport speedos.  And those who do wear "full bikinis" often change right on the beach without so much as trying to cover themselves.

Yet the mayor has declared full body swimsuits worn by Muslim women to be inappropriate, all in the name of secularism.

The French place a very high value on
secularism.  In schools and offices, for example, it is prohibited for people to wear religious symbols such as cross necklaces for Christians or veils for Muslims.  There is religious freedom, but it is not to be expressed in a way that may make others uncomfortable.

Therefore, in France, apparently it is more appropriate to be mostly naked than to show your personal faith convictions.

  1. I read about that ruling the other day and was very puzzled. Pretty strange!
