The Distant Older Cousin
16 months.
That's how long it's been since we were last in the United States. That's how long it's been since we've been in the Anglophone world.
Oh sure, we speak English at home with each other, and English is the language of choice for internationals in other European countries that we've visited; but there is something about being in a country where English is the national language that makes us feel...at home.
Have you ever been to England? I'm guessing that most of you reading this post who have been to England spent much of your time there noticing the differences between the United States and England; Jordan and I, however, just spent the last 6 days in England noticing how similar the cultures are.
They eat quick meals then move to the living room where they have big, comfy couches. They have carpet. Food at restaurants arrives within a few minutes and the servers return to check on their guests. They have Costco and Krispe Kreme Doughnuts and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Dr. Pepper! Customer Service people were quick to help us and happy to chat. People greet each other with a hello and leave with a "See you later!"
There was something strangely familiar about England, like spending time with a distant older cousin that you don't know very well but find that you share many similar personality traits. It was fun. Trivial things, yet undoubtedly comforting after living nearly 2 years in France.
Why were we in England? That's a story for another time.... but it wasn't a vacation....
