Coffee, Pastries, and Everyday People
An American friend experiencing withdrawal from Starbucks’
iced coffee brought to my attention that, while cafés and bakeries are both
popular in France, it’s difficult to find a place with both coffee and
pastries.
I wanted to disagree.
I wanted to defend France from this culture-shocked ex-pat.
But I couldn’t.
And then I found K fé T.
K fé T is a small shop furnished with a few small armchairs,
mismatched dining tables and chairs, decorated with original artwork, and displays
a window full of scones, muffins, and gluten free breads. Along with their pastries, they serve coffee,
tea, and an assortment of other hot, sweet flavored drinks.
Now that we are finished with full-time language school,
we must think about how we will prioritize our newly available hours. How would
Jesus use His time?
Jesus spent time getting to know the everyday people of whatever
community He visited. Should we not use our time as Jesus did? He was filled with compassion for the people of the communities because they did not know the Father.
My hope is that by spending more time at this cute café
tucked in the corner of Aix-les-Bains I, too, can rub shoulders with the
everyday people of this city and that they, too, may come to know the Father as I know Him.
Several weeks ago as I sat reading my Bible at K fé T, I wondered: Has a Bible ever been opened in this
place? Has the Name of Jesus ever been [properly] uttered by the mouths which so happily nibble on pastries while drinking
coffee? May I be a beacon of light in
this café; may the Name of Jesus become known in this place and in this city!
Now, who wants to join me at K fé T? My treat! ;)
