Families that Eat Together...
A friend of ours recently spent two weeks in the United States. He stayed with a family in North Carolina for 2 weeks, attended high school and college with two of their sons, and also competed in a golf tournament. He told us that after 2 weeks he was ready to come home because he missed French food. "Except breakfast," he told us. He really enjoyed the grits and biscuits and gravy, but otherwise there was too much fast food and he missed eating together as a family.
I thought it was interesting to hear of this 17 year old's experience in the US.
Of course, he comes from a family where his mother makes amazing meals 3 times/day 7 days/week. But even still, the fact that this teenager missed having healthy food choices (he didn't want to eat pizza from the school cafeteria every day, but he wanted more vegetables and a more balanced meal option) and he missed eating together as a family tells me something about the direction that American culture is going, particularly compared to French culture.
And I think it's sad.
Some days we struggle with some aspects of the French culture, but one thing we have come to really appreciate it the slower pace of life and the focus on relationships.
Do you find these there to be a lack of balanced meals and quality family time in the US? How does that compare to other countries and cultures?
