Chinese BBQ
The majority of students at our new language school come from China. In our class alone there are 10 Chinese students, 4 Americans (including Jordan and me), 2 Spaniards, and one Russian.
On Saturday night we hosted 6 of our classmates for dinner - all of which come from different cities all over China. It was great!
Jordan and I were never interested in China, but suddenly, we're interested in the government, religion, history, education, and Chinese culture. Our new friends are happy to share with us, and they are just as curious about our own experiences as Americans. Over our pulled-pork sandwiches, our conversations ranged from the intensity of school in China (our entire generation wears glasses in China, likely as a result of the rigorous academic studies for 10+ hours/day in high school) to types of food to holidays (such as All Saints Day, Christmas, and Easter) to Chinese philosophy. It was truly a great night.
Sometimes I really hate language school. OK, most times. But the relationships we are able to build with our classmates helps keep me going. We are looking forward to getting to know these classmates better over the next several months, and we hope to have a Chinese dinner with them soon!
