Market Days

1,50/kg is what the sign read.  How much is that going to cost? we wondered as we looked at the large carrots.  We looked at the man and told him we wanted quatre (4).  He weighed the carrots and told us we owed him 0,60.  OK, so we could have bought a few more carrots.

18,70/kg is what the braise cost.  First of all, what is braise?  It looks like ham, but ham is "jambon".  Second of all, how much do we want?  The man, in English, confirmed that it was indeed ham.  We told him we wanted a quarter of a kilogram.  "250 grams, you want?"  he asked.  Oh, yes.  1000 grams is 1 kilogram.

Wednesdays and Saturdays are Market Days, and, thus far, we have not been disappointed with our purchases (fresh fruits and veggies, homemade ravioli, lunch meat ... yum!).  It just takes time to understand what is a good value when everything is different.  Not only are we needing to learn French, but we also need to learn the metric system.  The metric system is not difficult, but it's different from what we are used to nonetheless.

Despite everything being different, we are enjoying our new home.  (And we promise, we will show you pictures of our new apartment, but for now we are busy setting it all up!)  It's great living in the city and having everything within walking distance!

  1. I know exactly how you feel! The market was always one of the most overwhelming things for me.
